How Can I Convince My Parents to Let me Get My Hair Dyed?

I'm 16, and I have been wanting to dye my hair a lighter shade for a while. It's not like I want to go Paris Hilton blonde or dye my hair green, but I have nearly black hair and I think dying it a warm, brown color will enhance my eyes and my complexion.

Hair color now (not me): http://inlinethumb30.webshots.com/157/10...

I understand all the risks %26amp; care that must be taken when altering hair color, and I am content with my hair, but I've been wanting a change for a long, long time. I try to reason with my mother, that I'll pay for the dye job, I'll take care of my hair, I'll go to a reputable salon, and I'm not asking to go blonde. She won't give me a legitimate reason for withholding permission. All she says is (literally) "No. Because I said so."

I've got an olive/rosy complexion %26amp; green eyes, btw. Any ideas?

This is a tough decision for a parent to make. Do you want a tattoo as well? A permanent hair color is just that...permanent. I wonder do you wear make up too? For a 16 yr. old it appears to me you are trying to grow up too fast. Maybe you want your hair dyed to make you appear older. WHY? Why don't you want to be the age you are? You will never be 16 again. I guess I am old fashion. I am a mother of a 12 yr. old. She might look older than 12 but she is still 12. Enjoy your youth. You will have your entire life to change you look. Listen to your parents and respect their wishes. Wait until you are grown, which is 18, and you can have your hair look as light or as dark as you want.

well that is tough, my mom always let me do what i wanted with my hair because she knew that i wasn't doing any of the other things teens do (sleep around, drink, drugs etc)

she figured since she pretty much controlled every aspect of my life that she would let me have control over my hair color.

many kids at school thought i was some big rebel and they would ask me what my mom thought of my hair I'd always be able to say, well she bought the dye and dyed hers along with mine.

they all thought i had the coolest mom because of that... so maybe you could turn it into something you guys could do together. a bonding moment, parents love that!

I'm a parent and my opinion is -- it's just hair! It will grow back, fade out, wash out, etc. - what's the big deal? It's not necessarily permanent like a tattoo. If a kid (I'm talking not younger than 13) wants to try to change their hair style, hair color, I say let them express themselves.

However, there's no arguing with your mother. So instead of continuing to insist on coloring your hair, sit down with her for a mature conversation about it. No raised voices, no arguing, no accusing tones - just calmly discuss with her the reasons you want to make this change and ask her for a more definite reason for not doing it. As an alternative, ask to use a non-permanent color on your hair at first (one that will wash out after 12 shampoos). And then go from there. Good luck.

My only problem with dying, perming, etc is it's really not healthy for your hair to be doing any of that. But that's just my two cents worth.

I started coloring my hair when I was 16, my hair was a dirty blonde and definitely didn't help that I was white as a ghost lol. As you've said, you are willing to pay for it yourself, etc. and aren't going for too dramatic. Have you shown your mother the color you want? I know it's difficult when parents say no, and believe me, I figure at 16 you should know how to care for your own hair.

I'm 23, I've never gone super dramatic fry my hair colors, I've always highlighted and lo-lighted my hair. The most dramatic was last year when I put dark red streaks in my hair LOL. I liked it, but getting it out was a pain. You wouldn't have that problem because going back to a naturally dark color...not so hard.

Anywho, if it doesn't work you can either, A. wait until you are 18 to do it or B. go against your mothers wishes and get it done anyway and unless your mom has the power to drag you kicking and screaming to "fix" it, then it'd stay. I don't necessarily recommend B. because you don't need friction with your parents at this age lol. Good luck hun, if you have to wait to be 18, then you just have to.

Wow thats a pretty colour. It must be hard that your mom won't let you. Try to reason with her. That colour really isn't a big deal. It's not like you want to to die it blue %26amp; get a mohawk. Just let her know why you want it %26amp; if she says no, make her give you a reason. If she thinks it will hurt your hair alot, it probably won't. Unless you have to bleach it. If she still won't let you then ask her about semi permenant die. Mabey even ask about half your hair died kinda like peek a boos. If she still says no %26amp; you decide to do it anyway. Well if she trys to die it back %26amp; her reason in the the first place was it will hurt your hair. Then she really can't or it would make no sence

Mabey even show her all these comments let her know that lots of people your age do it. This may not help much seeing as i'm only 14, but i've been dying my hair since i was 12. I died my hair about 30 times when i was 13 %26amp; bleeched it once. My hair still isn't fryed %26amp; it's really thick %26amp; soft. Most of those times i did it my self with stuff from the store. So you should be fine .
