How should I style my natural African hair?

I'm 100% black (to my knowledge) with super coily hair and angular kinks closer to my scalp. What type of styles and hair care products would work best with this type of hair? I'm thinking of getting a break from braids and going natural for a good while.

The key is to work with your particular texture of hair, and don't spend time trying to make it form into patterns it won't. That's step #1. Get a good shampoo, I reccommend the Khoret Amen Sea Moss shampoo from Carol's Daughter (Carolsdaughter.com or google it). It does not dry the hair and leaves is rich and soft (you won't believe it the first time you try it.) Try other things from her line, because they are made for natural hair. Also, I reccommend a leave in conditioner, and also a good oil to leave in, such as Coconut oil. A good very cheap conditioner is Suave--the Coconut flavor. Do NOT use petroleum based oils, only natural oils such as coconut, jojoba, almond because these can be absorbed by your hair. No gel, as it dries and strips, unless you use IC Aloe gel with no alcohol.

As for styling, just let it fly free. If it tends to be round, just make sure you pat it down so it's round. Healthy, shiny hair will be more important than the style so much. Just accentuate your natural beauty with beautiful flowers or pins, maybe consider herbal or henna coloring or even a cellophane rinse for added pizzazz. Remember; no alcohol products, no petroleum based products, and try to get products without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (this is what causes shampoos and conditioners to foam; it is highly stripping and drying and your hair will be healthier without it.)

Buy a Sophisticates Black Hair magazine or Braids and Natural magazine

You could just get it roller-setted so it would smooth out some of the curls without messing with them too bad. You can also try flat ironing it with a good shiny hair wax and then you can do just about anything you want with it. I went to an ethnic hair cosmetology school and that's what we used to do with beautiful natural hair.

Girl, you go embrace your natural. I was natural for almost two years. I won't even list all the stuff I have learned. This is a great site and my favorite BLACKHAIRMEDIA. You will find lots of great information about growing long and healthy hair.

I am a relaxer and I wash my hair 4 to 5 times a week, oil (olive, coconut, jojoba, etc) and then moisturizer. Yes, there is a difference in oil and moist. Moisturizer will seal the oil in.

You will have to find out what your hair love, but on this site you find so many listings of products that work. Be warned BHM is addictive.

Get some texturizing mousse and moisturizing sprays because that type of hair can become dry. When you rub them into your hair it Will bring out the curly texture. You could smooth it back into a ponytail or wear it loose with a head band. Or you could set it with tiny rollers to bring out the texture and then put a headband on it.
