My sister-in-law only bathes her dogs once a year. Is this healthy?

I live with my sister in law. . and she has some realy nasty nappy dogs. . they are discusting. Well it turns out we had a lice outbreak because of the kids. . and I decided to wash the dogs myself. The dogs seemed SO HAPPY to be clean and get scrubbed, it was unbelievble. When I was done the bath water was almost black! ( gross) Now the dogs smell good. .run around. .dont scratch. . and look cute! :)

I want to know. .should I say sometihng about how she cares for her dogs? Is this cruel to the dog/inhumane. Or do dogs not care if they are nasty?

My Fiance says she only washes them once a year .. in the summer when she cuts their hair. that doesnt sound good.

I don't think it would be harmful for the dogs, but it's not very nice for the humans who live with them.

Once twice a year is perfect.

Washing dogs should be done every few months. However washing too frequently or with the wrong shampoo could irritate their sensitive skin. We wash our dogs every couple of months, sometimes it can be longer but they don't ever get too dirty or smelly, and if they do the rain gives them a wash that is gentle but effective. Hope this helps you!

If her dogs are unusually clean all year, once a year is fine. I, personally, think it's a bit cruel. If the water was that dirty, she's neglecting her dogs by not getting them the grooming they need. I recommend that people bath their dogs once a month. You can try telling her how disgusting the water was after you bathed them, and how much cleaner and happier her dogs will be if they get bathed more often. Once every two months is even better than once a year.

That is animal abuse and very unsanitary. If the animals are inside of the house and don't bathe then that can be a Health Department Violation too. You should wash your dogs at least once a month at a minimum. If you report your sister in law she can get into serious trouble by the police. So you should warn her now because somebody eventually will report her.

mine is bathed professionally every 2 months. In between, I wash her. she has to be combed every day. I brush her. I have her groomed and her nailes trimmed professionally every other month. I think all dogs need to be bathed and brushed and nails trimmed and professionally groomed at least every 3 months. my opinion

i would say something. if you dont feel comfortable doing that, maybe call the humane society or animal control and annoymously tell them about the problem. (i saw it on animal cops, lol)

IF you dont think she'll will take your advise, maybe she'll listen better if someone else comes out and tells her she has to...

its definately not healthy for the dogs.

I'm not sure if it would be considered cruel, but if she is your roommate and her smelly dogs are bothering you, you should speak up. If you paying to live there you shouldn't have to live in filth. If she says she won't change her ways, and you still hate it...well, I guess you'll have to move.

As an afterthought, if the dogs are having to live as a host for insects or other parasites or are getting skin infections from matted hair, etc....that is cruel and inhumane, and she could be in trouble with the police if she's reported.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Larger dogs should be washed fairly frequently.. alot more than once or twice a year. This is because the dogs probably play outside quite a bit and when they come inside and run around lots of dirt and bacteria come inside. It's just like if you touch things at work or at a park or outside and don't wash your hands or have a shower. Dogs have more hair and really, if the dogs are inside they should be cleaned.

My cousin's dog smells after about a month :P and i communicate that to him. It's not rude to say it, it's just you have to say it in a nice way. Suggest giving it a bath more often, or offer to give it a bath yourself. whatever works :)

It depends on the dog. Some dogs with sensitive and dry skin do not need to washed as much because it will dry out their skin. But I would say they need to be washed at least once every 3 months.

We have 2 pit bulls and we bath our dogs once a month. I cant stand the "dirty dog" smell. I feel bad for the dogs.

It's ok to wash your dogs once a year IF they are not extremely dirty, if the water was as dirty as you say it was, then they do need washing more. My dogs don't get washed too often, because they're usually more or less overall pretty clean, plus we take them to dog parks and the like with rivers in them. So they get washed off a little that way too.

Dogs in their natural, wild state have survived without bathing since they evolved, so it is hardly likely that being unbathed will affect their health. It's when they live in close proximity to humans that hygiene becomes a problem.

Ewww...I'm not sure about unhealthy but it is groooooss.

Dogs shouldn't be bathed unless they need it. If they are really dirty then bathe them, not just because you think they need a bath. They should be groomed - brushing their hair and trimming nails. Obviously, if the dogs are nasty and the water comes out black, they needed to be bathed.

Its hard to know whether saying something to her will do any good, she may resent you for it and never wash the dogs anyway. She may stop inviting you over. She may just be clueless and your education may inspire her to care for her dogs better. You know her, we don't - go with your gut as to how she would react.

i have 2 dogs and i only give them a bath once a year aswell as if you bath them regularly you wash away all the natural oils in the dogs coat that help waterproof them in the rain. dogs keep themselves clean by washing themselves daily, and it is not cruel or anything it is good as the dog can become ill if you bath them in the cold which could lead to an expensive vet bill.

Dog will learn how to clean themselves, that is what they did in the wild. Unless they are are long haired dog it really doesn't matter. short haired dogs you don't need to give baths very often and short haired dogs dont even need baths ever. Unless a skunk or something gets it.

They should be washed when they are dirty, at least twice a year. Their analglands should be cleaned at that time as well. Ears should be checked and cleaned on a regular basis.

No, it's not abusive but stinky dogs is not something most people want to live with. I'm not understand if you mean the "kids" are the dogs with fleas or her children with head lice.
